Nikon 70-200 problem?

My Nikon 70-200 vr2 has just started making bizarre noises with the VR switched on. It seems to focus OK but then sounds as though something is grinding before dropping oof. It is very frustrating as a lot of my shots are turning out soft whereas they were once pin sharp :-(

I fear that something may be up! Has anyone else experienced this kind of fault? The lens has not been dropped, banged or otherwise mistreated.

Mine started doing it today. Did you ever find out what was going on Simon??

No, not found out and have tried a few suggestions from another similar post all of which pointed more towards the camera. However no problem with my other lenses.

Took it into digital depot who suggested a slight front focussing issue.

Still hit and miss and I get nervous / paranoid every time I use it. Am contemplating sending it off for a service now, before I get into this years weddings.

Will keep you posted of any news / findings

I have something similar, but one of the optics in the lens goes mental, flicks around and then it's OOF. I believe there's a quirk to do with the VR spooling up and down properly when you turn it on and off to early.
