Hello

I was out yesterday and when using the new lens i found that anything at a distance it struggled to focus on and the images were not that sharp is this normal?

I then realised the front ring which is for manual focus if i slightly moved that and then pressed to focus it gave me a sharper look in the view finder but even so the images were not sharp when processed and was grainy!

Will doing that damage the lens motor ? and what advice do you have when using this lens?

Does this make sense?

Thanks
Karl

Not normal no - that lens should produce superbly sharp pictures. This is an AF-S lens so you can focus manually at any time. What body are you using it on?

Post up some pics, let us see.

Grainness to me = High ISO, so its quite possible you are shooting at a high ISO and loosing sharpness in the the image.

The 70-200 should be very sharp at all lengths. How was the light when you were trying to focus, and what were you focusing on?

Karl, the lens is sharp at all lengths. Did you have VR on whilst trying to shoot birds? What shutter speeds were you getting? Was it a dull day? It's more likely user error than lens problems as it was bang on sharp on mine.

How old is the lens? I've seen a 70-200mm vr do something similar to this. It was the start of the focus motor on it's way out. Sometimes it just didn't focus correctly or not at all. If the focus ring was moved slightly, it helped. It finally gave up.
Hopefully it's not the same fault as yours. The repair bill was about £300 at Nikon.

Kev.

Was VR on? If so, turn it off :D
