I've had problems in the past when focus has pulled to a background object I wanted in the foreground, or vice versa. I seem to get finger trouble using the focus lock on the end of the lens, and just wonder if anyone has any tips on how to best use it? I find it tricky as the lock buttons do not rotate with the focus ring.

How about utilising back button (AF ON) focus ? Once you've focused release the button, recompose and shoot. The shutter button will only engage VR and trip the shutter. Works for me.
Sounds worth a try. Its mainly when I'm shooting martial arts, and similar action. I don't have time (or I'm too slow) to fiddle about. I can adjust focus manually, but by the time I've fingered around for the focus lock, I miss the shot I wanted. If that would work for continuous focus, I could use the limited time to recompose... Either way, need more practice!
