Has anyone experience in using both the Nikon 70-300 f2.8 VRII + TC-14E III and the 300mm f4 PF.
I've moved to the Z series, I sold most of my F-mount stuff but held on to the 70-200mm f2.8 VRII. I had the 300mm f4 PF and sold it a while ago and missed it since.
I've been out of work for a bit and looking to get a longer focal lens but can't afford much. Ideally I'd purchase another 300mm f4 PF as it was small/light and good.
But would the 70-200mm f2.8 VRII with the TC-14E III teleconverter be better? It'd be f4 too and be more versatile being 98mm-280mm and cheaper than a new lens but heavier.
Anyone used the TC-14E III on the VRII and compared it to the 300mm PF?

I've used a TC 14E ll on a 70-200 f2.8 VRll and I don't think the difference with the TC 14E lll would be great ... my view is that it wouldn't match the 300 f4 PF in image quality. If you don't need the zoom I would settle on the IQ, weight and convenience of the 300 PF, like you I loved it when I had it.

PS thread title will confuse!

I use my 70-200VR2 with the 1.4 tele - works perfectly & you don't need to stop down.
The x1.7 is not great & the x2 is only OK.
What are you shooting>
Do for need the flexibility of a zoom?
If I know I am not shooting nearer then I will take my 300vr2 2.8 - now thats even better with a 1.4... lol
The 400 2.8 takes a x1.4 perfectly & also the x2 - although I drop a stop for that..

These are all heavy lenses..

if you can, try the 80-400. If flexibility terms its amazing... I'm not keen on it in crap light but as a do it all works pretty well. Weighs the same give or take as the 70-200..
