Nikon 70-300 VR problem?

I have just taken the camera into the back garden to take some shots and have noticed that when I keep the shutter release pressed halfway I can feel a constant vibrating from within the camera.

Is this the focusing motor working away? I thought it would start, then stop then if I press the button again it would refocus. Instead, it's constantly working. Is this normal?

Worried I have a duff lens.... :(
 
probably the VR working.

The focus motor will work as you describe if the focus is set to single - in servo mode it will constandly adjust

You were both right. It was the VR.

Thank you both for clearing this up for me. I feel a little bit stupid now :bang: learning though :)
 
Though you've got to admit it's a bit funny when the Vibration Reduction mechanism causes vibration. No need to feel stupid about that!
