Nikon 70-300mm vr for Football?

Been a while since I have owned a decent zoom my last one was the sigma 100-300mm f4 which I loved..very sharp and served me well for my sons football and wildlife.Sadly not in the financial position to replace this directly so have been contemplating the nikon as I have seen some great shots from it both wildlife and some sports.I appreciate I will need good light to get the most out of it for football and I can always boost the iso.It would be great to see some sports shots from anyone that uses one regularly for it. I did contemplate the sigma 70-200mm but would like the 300mm range available if needed tbh.

I have started doing a bit of football recently and have the 70-300vr. As you say you do need decent light but I think it does OK - these three were published in the east Anglian Daily Times - one as a half page size image!!

I am looking to save to get the sigma 120-300 f2.8 so that I am better covered for the crap light that is due over the coming months and also as a long lens for my wildlife stuff. I think that MPB had a 100-300 f4 as well.

Thanks mate cracking pics and certainly convinced me that it will do me for the time being. I also looked at the 120-300mm but was huge lens and tbh reckon the 100-300mm wasn't far behind if not the same optically at the same aperture. How do you find its focusing?
 
The focusing is not too bad with the D300 - as to be expected it gets worse as the light goes.

If you are interested ion s/h MPB have got 70-300vr's at just over £300 and a 100-300 f4 sigma for £499 :shrug:

Cheers Nick,at that price rather buy a new NIKON but the sigma is tempting!
 
Cheers mark,yep had the 1.4x converter with my old sigma. The one for sale is the older non dg one. Had one of these prior to my dg version and kept getting "err" messages. I returned it apparently it needed re chipping. For similar money I could possibly get a 120-400mm OS second hand.
