Nikon 80-200 AF-D two ring

Hey Guys,

How's the focus speed on these?

Looking to hopefully accumulate one soon-ish. Depending on whether it's suitable for weddings i.e shooting a bride walking towards me, camera set on continuous focus

Any advice on this lens appreciated.

Anyone know how this lens compares to the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 HSM II for focus speed and accuracy?

The focus speed of the Nikon depends on which body you're using.

D40 etc - no AF
D70 etc - wimpy AF motor - not as fast as the Sigma
D3 etc - butch AF motor with plenty of torque - pretty quick

i had a siggy 70-200mm f2.8 and it was sharp wide open, i now have the nikon 70-200mm and man its just worlds apart its not just sharp wide open, its oh so sharp.
pay abit more and go for a nikon 70-200mm its worth it they go for about £900 to £950

I have just picked one up and use it on my D700 and needless to say the AF is pretty quick, and that's compared to my (now sold) nikon 24-70. But it depends on what body your mounting this to.
I used a sigma 70-200 when I was shooting canon and found it okay wide open but given Sigmas quality control your not guaranteed to get a good copy. Where as the 80-200 is sharp at 2.8 and if you spend a few hundred more you could get the even better 70-200.

AF speed on my D2x (butch motor as Stewart puts it ) turns it nicely. There's a lot of glass to move around so the screwdriver AF will never be as good as a dedicated in-lens motor, but it's still pretty rapid. I love mine but I'm selling to move up to a 70-200mm for the VR and little extra reach.

In comparison to the Sigma, if I remember rightly, the Siggy was more contrasty and gave a slightly warm look. Build is good - not as good as the Nikon though - and AF is really good. Mine had back focus problems so had to be sent back for recalibration. Good lens but the Nikon us better.

For weddings you'll have no problems at all. In terms of image characteristics it's quite a neutral lens in terms of contrast; I find it makes processing images easier because you're never having to calm down contrast and black point. 80-200 is a quality lens....

I've used an 80-200 2.8 AF-D on a Nikon D300 for weddings (static shots) and cross country/relay running events. It works fine for me. Lower light will get it hunting for focus but in good light it's really good.
