Nikon 80-200 AFS or Tamron Di VC

Mulling over either of these as I can get a new Tamron for a few pounds more than the AF-S. But my ultimate question is which gives the sharpest images. Having the VC feature is a bonus and adds to producing a sharper image but the Nikon is I believe a well respected lens but obviously older. I'd appreciate any thoughts and comments from users especially anyone who's owned or used both.
 
Can't say for the AF-S version of the nikon 80-200 but I have the older AF-D which is a superb lens. I did read that the older AF-S motors are more prone to failure so bear that in mind. That and the difference in cost between the AF-D and AF-S is why I chose the older model. (can't argue with £250, as I could buy a couple and keep the best for the same cost as the others)
 
That's something definitely bear in mind as the AF-D are cheaper but I know optically won't be a disappointment. Means more money for another lens then.
 
Had the Nikon AFS 80-200mm...
Fast, sharp whats not to like....
Then borrowed a friends 70-200mm VR1 for 5 weeks & thought that was better so bought a 70-200mm VR2....lol

At the price point you are looking at I'd also look at the Sigma 70-200mm OS as that has an excellent rep & to be fair I'd get it new if only to get the warrenty.
 
If you get a good copy the Tamron VC is only second best to the Nikon 70-200 vr2 doesn't work with teleconverters though.
