Nikon 80-200 f2.8 metering problem?

Hi,

I've got an old nikon 80-200 f2.8 (push pull type) and it appears to be causing my d700 (and i think my d300s did it aswell) to overexpose. I had to dial in 2 stops of compensation to get it right today.

Please excuse the composition etc... the first was taken with my standard -0.7, then the second was with about -1 and the third which i would say is probably just on the edge of underexposed was at -2 These are RAW straight from the camera, no fiddling. No problems with any of my other lenses on either the d700 or d300. Is this common or known fault? Anything i can do? can't afford a new(er!) one just yet!

Have you tried having a play with the aperture leaver that sticks out of the back of the lens mount. It should operate nice an freely and snap open and closed. It should be on the stopped down setting when off the camera and you should be able to open it to f2.8 by operating the lever, any sticking at either end will cause the camera to have exposure problems.
 
Cheers, I'll have a look at that. It was serviced last year so hoping nothing majors wrong!
 
Nope, the aperture lever is fine. No sticking what so ever. very strange!
 
Is their chance you could try it on another camera :)

Nope, sold the d300s to fund the d700! I remember thinking it was over exposing on the d300s though never actually tested it properly. I'll see if i've got some shots from it on the d300s.
 
Hi,is the model before the ED one,if so you could be having problems with the Nikon matrix metering,try centre weight metering :)
