Having used the 70-200 AF-S VR1 & own an 80-200 AF-S, I can say that I love my 80-200. As said above, on the D3 it feels nicely balanced. It focuses very quickly and accurately in all but the lowest light levels.
I had the focus motor and dc-dc board replaced on mine by Fixation a couple of years ago when the AF failed, been perfect since, although the repair was about £350 if I remember correctly so if considering purchasing this lens remember they stopped making it in 2003 so if still on its original AF motor it is now 10 years old.
I don't think I'll be selling mine anytime soon.
