Just got this lens second for good money I think, can't wait to get a better body so the AF works as I only have the d3200! But been using it in Manual and seems great. Thought this would be a good alternative to the more expensive 70-200mm

Sean,

It is a good lens, but the issue is non VR. It depends what you use it for?

Cool, in that case should be good. Enjoy your new lens.

Once I have either a d7200 or d610 should work great! Then a 600mm is needed for the real wildlife

80-200 has a very good IQ, heavy'ish but a quality lens ... oh and a bit cheaper than a 600mm! :)

It's a great lens, comes in different versions. Combined push-pull focus and zoom, 2 ring focus and separate zoom, screw drive, af-s, several incarnations over the years, very solid, excellent image quality... Might be a bit of a bind on a 'manual focus' body and being lightweight. I always enjoyed it on my gripped FX D700 and DX D300. I think you'll find the AF speed depends on the body. My D300 focused it faster than my D7000, and I think that was because the D300 had a stronger screw drive motor.

I had that version too, great lens! I found it had lovely rich contrast, I used it with the D90, it did AF with that. I've owned the 70-200 2.8 since, and honestly, optically, it's hard to tell the difference.
