I am looking to buy a Nikon 80-200mm F2.8D IF-ED AF Nikkor
As i simply cant afford the 70-200, this is the 2 touch not pull and push.
Being new to Nikon i would just like some advice on the quality of this lens, i can buy new for £699 which seems a bargain and only slightly more expensive than the Sigma 70-200 f2,8 which i was also considering.

So can anyone advise which would be best on my D300?

Hi I have the older push pull and in 55years of taking pictures it's without doubt the best lens I have ever owned, I use it on D300 and apart from being a bit slow to focus it's just about perfect. At present it's away being cleaned. They can collect a lot of dust inside which does not really seem to affect the end result.
Get one tomorrow.

I've got loads of shots on my flickr site shot with that lens - it's awesome; quick AF, great IQ and the build quality is brill.

Optically 1st Class, AF is a bit slow, noisy and occasionally clunky compared to the newer models...

Try before you buy - there will be a lot out there that have been terribly abused...

Some of them by me...:D

I have one on my d300 and it is awesome. A wee bit heavy after a while but that aside worth every penny of the 600 euro's it cost

Raider, quick word of advice - you'll receive a fancy but relatively pointless hard case for the lens and NO hood to keep the flare off. Have a shop round and buy a good one that fits, as it's a nice tool to keep flare off when shooting near strong sunlight....

Also, when the AF kicks in (after the camera has been on standby for example) the AF kicks in with a, well a kick, which is quite normal :)
