Nikon 80-400 AF-S ..... Rubber Ring On the Front?

Morning all ..... It's a bit silly to me but is there a reason for it?

The other day I went out for a drive with my kit and stopped as I saw a tree in the distance so thought I'd stick my Grad filter on and take a snap but when I tried screwing on the Lee Adaptor ring I realised there's a rubber front end on the 80-400which stops you screwing the adaptor on .... Why's that there??

The adaptor I'm using is the wide angle one as it's the only 77mm I own would it make a difference if I used the normal one??

I hadnt even noticed that on mine and Ive had it since they were released. I think the rubber buffer on the end is just part of the weatherproofing. It still has a 77mm filter thread so shouldnt interfere with filter attachment?

Yeah the threads there and if you turn it back over you can here the thread click but as soon as you go to tighten it because it's rubber it grips before actually screwing on to the threads

As I mentioned I've got the wide angle adaptor so not sure if the normal one would help but IMO the rubber is useless

Try slightly dampening the inside of the rubber to stop it gripping as you screw the filter in. Water is a lubricant for rubber so that may do the trick. Ive never encountered that before but then I stopped using a filter on my 80-400 ages ago.

My worry then would be once it drys out the holders stuck on :| I really want to see if the none WA adaptor would work if it does I'll buy one of it doesn't I'll just have to place it on and hope for the best
