Hi All. You have probably had this discussion before but I am new to the site. I have a Nikon D300 and want to buy the Nikon 80-400 or the Sigma 120-400 lens but have read issues with both. Any advice is welcome.

Cheers Dave.

I have the 120-400 and now I have had time to get used to it I think it is a cracking lens and although I did consider changing to the 80-400 I can't see what I would gain so am keeping it. There are a few example images on my flickr but considering the range of the lens I think it is a pretty good buy!

What are you intending to use the lens for? Wildlife, motorsport, Aviation? as both lenses have their problems.

For the safari, light conditions should be good, Works well upto 300mm, but then things start to fall off and become soft, so you'll need to step down the aperture.

Similar problems with the Sigma, but will be slower to focus

Both lenses will require good light conditions to get the best from them, if I had to choose it would be the Nikon over the Sigma.

or an alternative?

I own the Sigma (Canon fit) and am more than happy with it, it's an excellent lens for the money. Wildlife isn't really my forte but there are some bird shots on my Flickr if you want to have a look what the lens will do :)

Thanks for your help Peter, i'll study the links you posted.

Richard had a look at your pics. Not bad are they. Were the car pics taken with the sigma as well?

Cheers Dave

Pretty much everything since mid-November 2008 is taken with the Sigma 120-400. As you can see motorsport is what I spend most of my time shooting. If you look back at my 2008 season stuff you can see what a massive improvement the lens is over the Canon 75-300mm lens I was using previously. For £550-£600 I don't think you can argue, and the IS is brilliant.
