Nikon 85mm 1.8 and 1.4 compared

Very useful - thank you.

I'm looking for a used 1.4 at the moment, though unsurprisingly they're as rare as hens teeth.

The price of the new version is just ludicrous IMHO.

f/1.8 looks the better lens - providing those tests apply to the majority of production lenses (and that these aren't oddities in a production run), the cheaper lens definitely looks better for edge sharpness and there's little in it on centre resolution and sharpness.

I have a pre-'D' f/1.8 and it looks to pretty much match those results. All that extra for what is only a slightly faster lens seems a lot. Then again, this is serious pixel peeping but on the other hand, when you're spending £600+ you want to know you're getting the best.....

I Like the 1.8. On Pixel peepers you can see the creamier backgrounds from the 1.4 but at the moment this is my most used lens.

But as this will often be used for portraits, do you need sharpness at the edges.

Based on this review, I would go for the 1.4 if I was shooting at wide open or say 1.8 a lot as it is a lot sharper. But at 3 times the price I would stick with the 1.8 if I did not shoot wide open.
