Nikon 85mm AF-S - is it any good?

What is everyone's opinion on the Nikon 85mm AF-S f1.8?

I've been thinking about different lenses over the past month or so from the superwide angle zoom of the Tokina 11-16, to the Nikon 17-55. However, I've decided that that kit lens will suffice for the moment and I'm really wanting a moderate telephoto prime lens - the main purpose will be portraits of my newborn (due date next week!). I currently have the kit lens, 55-300mm and 35mm f1.8 for my D3100. So, I feel having the 85mm would be a good addition. I was maybe thinking of the 105mm but feel as if this focal length will be limiting.

Does anyone own the 85mm AF-S lens? Any opinions on this?
 
I've been lusting after this lens too. It's supposed to be one of the sharpest lenses which Nikon sell. The only thing which is stopping me is that I have only just bought the 70-200 VR1 so not sure in reality how much sharper it will be for me.

But on your body you will have the crop factor to deal with which then makes it effectively 127mm which might be too close for you indoors.

You may instead want to check out the 50mm which would give you 75mm. I have this lens and I LOVE it.
 
Imo 85 on crop is to long, if youve got a big house its fine as head and shoulder shots will be 2m+ distance. Newborn = indoors. 50mm would be a better focal length and cheaper.

I just bought one for the D800. I had the old D version in the past on my D90. I found it a little on the long side for my needs at the time, but it was wicked sharp. I feel it'll be much nicer on FX, but if you don't mind it being tight indoors, go for it. It's a great price, and DXO mark have only recently reviewed and tested it and put it straight to the top of their lens rating database, ahead of the pricier 1.4G. You've got the 35mm for indoors anyhow.
