Nikon 85mm D vs G

Personally, I don't think there's a lot in it, I certainly don't think there's enough to warrant the extra £1,000.

I just bought a D version from a fellow TPer as it goes, who sold to upgrade to the G. I know that Guy has also sold his D and moved up to the G as well. I've always wanted the D version and am delighted to finally have one, I honestly believe the bokeh is just as good on the D as the G, although I can't comment on speed of focus or focal distance etc as I haven't used the G, just seen images taken with it.
 
I've just upgraded to the G (hence my for sale thread). To me the big improvements are

1. Its warmer, and much more inline with the images that moderns Nikkor lenses produce. I though this was the big weakness of the D

2. It has modern coatings and controls ghost and flare better

3. Its better in high contrast, backlit situations

Worth the premium, not sure yet

Thanks Dave, I couldn't justify the new one but the old one 2nd hand is tempting...

Anybody tried both?

To be honest Pete, there's not that many D lenses on the market these days, I had to wait ages before one came up. If you're considering Hugh's, I wouldn't leave it too long before making a decision as for that price, it's a cracking deal.

I'll let you know how they differ once bloody Nikon decide to sell me one!!! :bang::bang:
They seriously need to get their act together with availibilty of new kit. :(

After owning both (I was the one that sold Dave the D version) I will admit that it is a lot more money for not a huge amount of difference. The biggest thing for me is the faster auto focus. I certainly have a higher rate of keepers and for me that makes it worth the extra money. The D is a truly stunning lens though and at current prices is a complete bargain. Bokeh wise there is pretty much nothing in it.

Thanks guys, I have just bought Hugh's D from the classifieds. Advice appreciated!
 
I have the old D which is my favourite lens. My only gripe is that you cannot override the autofocus by hand without changing to manual focus.

I suspect this is possible with the G, but I'm not paying THAT PRICE for the privilege :eek:
 
I love my 'D', and like the look of the new lens a lot - I had a play with it at Photokina this year - but I doubt I'll be dropping another £1500 just to get slightly better performance in backlit situations...
The kind of work I do with it also negates the faster-AF capability...
As to it producing Warmer Images...? Hmmm...I think I'll just Photoshop it if it doesn't look right...lol

I think a 105 f/2.8D and 135mm f/2D will come before the new 85-G as I can buy both lenses new for the price of the new 85......

Great Stuff, I'm looking forward to getting this, I think at £650 I could use it for a year and not lose more than £100 if I sold it, that's a pretty cheap rental.
