Does anyone have both the above lenses? For portraits I'm currently using my 50mm f/1.4 Sigma 70% of the time and then the 70-200 for head/head+shoulder shots. The 70-200 produces great results but I've got 2 issues with it -

1 its damn heavy and big when shooting in my small (home) studio

2 the 1.5m min focus distance means if I'm not carefull I end up to close to the subject.

If the 70-200 produces better/similar results to the 85mm then I'll carry on as I am I think, just trying to decide if its worth me buying the 85mm f/1.8 (no I can't afford the f/1.4!)....:thinking::thinking:

Phil,

I haven't got the 70-200mm however I do have a Nikon 80-200mm as well as 85mm f/1.8 AF and f/1.4 (AI-S) lenses. I find the 85mm lenses an idea lens for indoor shots on a FF camera. The zoom lens is good for creative shots/tighter framing but I find myself using it more outside than inside...

What focal length are you finding yourself zooming into with your VR lens?

I only have the 70-200 and set about 120 you get beautiful portrait shots with it.

agreed - I'd complment it with the 85 1.4 but I don't think you gain anything , except losing some wait, with the 85 1.8 added to the 70-200

I have both the 85 f1.8 and the 70-200 VR and I use both for portraits. For a consitant 'look' to a session I prefer the 85 and leg-zoom; but out & about, and for Weddings etc., then the 70-200's quicker zoom come in handy

Not sure if that helped at all
