After an initial problem purchase I picked up a good Nikon 85mm f1.8 AF-D and I must say that I am loving the way it works for me.
I've mainly used zooms before and currently have the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 but this 85mm f1.8 gives some really good results and I feel really comfortable using it.
I was wondering what extra you get for going f1.4, okay obviously a bit better for low-light conditions but what else do you get over the f1.8 for the £xxx's more in cost?
 
I find that I think at the 85mm focal length, so much so that I have had the f1.8 then the f1.4D and now the f1.4G

I think that the 85mm f1.8 is a bragin of a lens. at f2.8+ it is exectional,

My complaints with it are below f2.8 where I find the bokeh very "jittery" and distracting. (I know it is a presonal thing) and you can get quite pronunced purple fringing on high contrast subjects.

ive not used the 1.8 but do own the 1.4g.
great lens but cost alot. especialy when i bought it just after release.

if i was in the market for one now the sigma would maby be my choice.
Due to the price and what seems to be as good preformance.
 
Ryan Brenizer is becoming one of my favorate photographers, and his reviews of gear, are intellagent and level headed, I bought the 85mm G because I won quite a bit of money in a photography competion and decided to treat myself.

But Ryan is spot on about the law of diminishing returns.

Personly I tried the sigma on Calumets open day and I didn't get on with it. I found my D produced a clearer image. but my imprestion is only based on 5 side by side test shots in a shop.
