So after a long period of saving money I’m at the point of a decision; Sigma 50mm F1.4, or the Nikon 85mm F1.8. I currently own (amongst other lenses) a 35mm F1.8, now I’m left feeling like I want a shallower DoF, I want that magical creamy Bokeh! As both lenses are nearly identical in price its left to the question of which one will get less DoF, a longer focal length but slower aperture, or shorter focal length with a faster aperture. Both are brilliant performers from what I’ve seen anyway.

Another question would be if I get the 50 will it make my 35 redundant with the focal lengths being quite similar, please share your experiences with these lenses or focal lengths etc,

Thanks a lot, Niall :)

not an easy question to answer without knowing what you are intending on photographing - both are great lenses. The 85mm will give you the shallower dof and the more out of focus background, especially when you are close to your subjects. If you are going down the primes route, Id think more about which one to get first, rather than it being one or the other. Personally I'd hang onto the 35mm for now, maybe go with the 85mm first, then when you do have the cash pick up the 50, swap the 35 for something a little wider.

I ordered the 50 in the end, I got my 55-200 out to see what 85mm looked like to get a feel for what it’d be like and came to the conclusion that it’d be too long for most of the stuff I shoot regularly. I’m really exited for the 50, should be good for street photography!

The Sigma 50mm1.4 is ace. I have it currently on a 60D, and as of tomorrow on my 5Dmk3 :D It's been my most used lens since I bought it, prior to that the 1.8 50mm was. It's a great length on crop. I can't help wondering if I'll be using the 85L more than any other on full frame now.

Anyway, rambling aside, the Sigma lens is ace!

A 5D mk3 and 85 F1.2 is a monster combo, should be a huge step up from the 60d, have fun!

Hopefully the siggy should be coming in the next few days, I’ll post pics when I test it out :)

Well I doubt I'll be using the 85L as much as the 50mm on crop. It's WAY too slow, but will definitely have it's place for controlled situations. I've seen people talking about how slow it is, but it's night and day difference compared to the 50mm or even the 35L.

When I first tested it earlier, it brought to mind soldiers hand cranking an old canon to the correct angle of fire :D

It used to be. I used to mess around on facebook changing my name. One day it wouldn't let me use Niall Allen :( now I'm stuck with Niall ponktastic Allen :D
