Following on this thread and having spent some time at the weekend, I've decided that a 50mm is not for me. I already have a 17-50, so i'd be doubling up. I have a 35mm 1.8g too

That got me thinking about 85mm 1.8g which would be good length for my kids and quite compact too.

I've done a search but cannot see much in the way of experience of this lens on here - has anyone got / had one ?
 
I've had one and found it to be excellent - I sold it to get a Nikon 85mm f1.4 as I thought it would be even better ... I was disappointed for the price difference. I think if I was going to go for an 85mm again I would probably choose the f1.8.
 
Have an 85f1.8 great for portraits. As much as i'd like a 1.4 I can't justify the extra money when the 1.8 is as good as it is.
 
I have the 85 f1.8 and absolutely love it. I ound it was a 'tad' long for indoor shots when using it on my D7000, but outdoors was great. I now just use it on a 35mm film SLR.

he has - wish he'd go away. To be fair ( in my little pee brained mind ), I sold a d3100, 18-55, 10-20 and some other stuff...which means that techincally I have spare pennies so I could buy a lens and still be better off than before. Why is it that lenses are always cheaper a week before you start looking at them :o
 
Yup, I've got one, it was my most used lens on trips away over the last couple of years. Great for street, as it gives you a little distance, and great for portraiture too. You can use it easily enough indoors, once it's a big room, otherwise a bit tight - good for head shots though.

This is on FX, if you're using DX format I probably would say it'll be a mostly outdoor lens for you.
 
Had a 1.8 85mm G and it was a lovely lens, just didn't use it much. If you need that length then you will have no regrets
