Having sold my 17-55, I now have a hankering for the above and wondered on thoughts from those here who use one. At the moment all I have is the 50 G, 70-200 VR1 (which is a bit big to lug around sometimes) and a siggy 10-20 for the wide stuff, so my thinking was the 50 & 85 prime mix (one on cam and one in pocket type thing). Would this combo work or are they too close to worry about? Most of you have seen my snaps by now anyway, tending to be shots taken here and there of a variety amount of different things.

I use a Tamron 28-75 2.8 with by D300 as well as a 50mm 1.4G and the VR1 70-200. For baby shoots I tend to use the 50mm, sometimes using the Tamron. If I think I need length the 70-200 and if its more of a walkabout the Tamron. Tamron has good IQ, obviously not as good as the 50mm but very close to the 17-55 I used to have. Sometimes I find a zoom is quite useful and as you have the Sigma, you have up to 20mm covered.

I had one and it's a fantastic lens; a bargain really, especially when comparing the price to the F1.4 - I wouldn't say the 85mm and 50mm were a particularly good combination for walkabout though; probably something like the 35mm and 85mm would be far better if you want to stick to primes...

Appreciate your input guys, thanks.

Would completely agree with DekHog, I have the 35mm and 85mm (along with UWA zoom) and it's a great combo. Quite tempted by the Sigma 50mm 1.4 but think Im pretty happy with what I have got at the mo.

Indeed it is a bargain compared to the 1.4, people who have used both often say there's not much in it picture quality wise, and you can pick up a 85mm 1.8 used for about £200ish, i would also agree the 50mm and 85mm are not the best walkabout combination, the range is to close together for me, but as mentioned the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 is a great walkabout, and a decent combination with the Nikon 85mm :)

When I used to use primes, I had a Nikkor 35mm f/2 on as my general-purpose lens and used a Nikkor 105 f/2.5 when I needed to get closer-in...

Then zoom lenses suddenly got better about 15 years ago...

the 85mm is a great lens especialy when you look at the price

i would highley reccomend it

Cheers guys... thinking cap on :D
