Nikon AF 70-300mm

Not really. It's not the worst in the world, but the price reflects its performance.

thought so seems very cheap. I have heard good reports about Nikon AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G VR though so may look at this.

That's an incredible lens for the money.

If you wanted a good but cheap 70-300mm without VR then have a look at the tamron which can be had for about the same price as the Nikon.

Anyway first choice would have to be the 55-200mm.

The 55-200 is a great lens for the money. I had one for a while, but ... I did have issues with colour fringing at 200mm, and I found the lens very soft at f/4, stopped down it was fine. I would save a bit extra and get the Nikon 70-300 VR, even used.

I bought the 55-200 and for the money it is a great lens. But I found it didn't do my d7000 proud and I ended up buying the 70-300VR which I much preferred. I'd say it is worth the extra money, but only when you have it ofcourse.
