Nikon AF-ON only

Can anyone explain a situation where this would be useful please. I understand how it works just don't understand why I would want to use AF-ON button for focus and shutter release for metering/ release.

Focussing then recomposing - you try and minimise the recomposing element by selecting the closest AF point but there may be times where its on neither one point nor another, or where the subject is too far from the nearest AF point - as a result the final exposure will be different from the first subject position.

Moving subjects. If A runs behind B and pre focus on A using the AF-ON the release won't interfere with the focus.

If A is 500+ feet away you can focus using the AF-ON and release using the shutter. Distance of subject remains the same no refocusing required.

Pre focus on given subject. A passes through / past / on subject rattle off your shutter slightly before through slightly after. A guaranteed sharp.

Its goes on and on.

It also conserves battery if you use VR lenses, VR only kicks in on a half press of the shutter. It also means not having to change focus mode, you can have continuous, one shot, and manual focus without moving the switch
