I want to buy a prime lens for a while and been thinking between 35mm or 50mm. while i was researching for the lens, the 40mm came up to me. it has 1:1 micro as well as i like micro.

Nikon offers £25 cashback so it is quite a good deal at the moment.

however people rarely mention about this lens, so would like to get the opinions from you guys. thanks
 
A lot of people have bought, and continue to use this lens. For the price, you get a lot - a fine little portrait and general purpose prime, and 1:1 macro capabilities on top. It's not as bright as other primes, that's the compromise.

Certainly won't expect a lot from it,consider about the price. From the sample photo on the internet,I think it will do me. you prefer this one or the 50mm?

I have one of these....only received it a couple of days ago though so not really had the chance to use it properly yet.
Its the typical Nikon build for that price range...quite plasticky, but for £200 its not bad. So far the IQ seems pretty good on my D7000 and focussing is nice and quick. It will focus down to 13cm IIRC but you need lots of light because that close the camera throws its shadow over the subject. A remote flash or ring flash would remove this problem. In bright light though its not really an issue.
 
True that, but the 50mm won't get anywhere near as close focusing. And for macro nobody really uses wider apertures. The 40mm is going to close down to f/5, like every other macro lens, when shooting in very close. But it'll give you 2.8 shooting at normal distances - infinity no problem.

It's just something the op should know before making a decision.
 
If I wasn't interested in macro, on a DX body I'd go for the 35mm.

It doesn't really matter what we would like because everyone has different preferences.

I like to be further away from my subjects and so a 50mm is better for me.

Why don't you take a lens with all the ranges and shoot at them for a week each?
 
It's no harm to get an idea of what others would choose, but Phil is right: it's you who it has to suit. Use a kit lens and try 35, 40, 50mm - stick it at each for at least a day and you should know what will suit best. May not sound like much difference between them, but I'm betting you'll find the 50 a bit tight on DX indoors.
 
all advises/thoughts are greatly appreciated. i actually tried the above idea and hard to decide between 35 and 50. when i was doing the research, the 40mm came across my mind and it is in the middle range of those two and has macro too, so i am tempted.

merely want to know more of what others choices, apart from personal preferences. i am glad that i find this forum and forgive my bluntness :)
 
Don't ever worry about being blunt around here! :D

Thing is, if the lighting indoor is dim - if you don't have big kick ass windows that get the sun during the day say - well, you're probably going to want to use flash with any of the lenses you choose and bounce the light, rather than having to up your ISO too much. In that case, the 40mm is still ideal, as outside it's going to be great.
