i use a 70-300 none VR with my D90 and never really had any issues that would mean me wanting to change to a VR lens especially with the £300 price difference.
Go for the vr, you will notice the difference in low light unless you plan on carrying a tripod . Had the non vr kit lens and changed straight away for the 70-300 vr(more for length than vr) but have found vr very useful. There might be one still in the classified section.
I've got the VR version of the lens , I've never had a none VR version so have nothing to compare it to , I am however very happy with the lens ,prob not much help i know
Get the VR one if you can, it's a cracking wee lens, unless you're on a really tight budget,in which case have a scour through the For Sale section here on TP, there are a few secondhand VR and non-VR versions there at excellent prices
go for the VR, its a cracking lens ive got one aswell as a non VR 70-300 and if possible i will always chose the 55-200 and do a crop, over hand holding the none VR at 300mm
I've got the VR version - really like it and had some cracking results, even hand held in low light. I haven't tried the non-VR version myself so can't really make a direct comparison. Might not be much help, just my experience...
