Nikon AF-S 55-200mm VS Tamron 70-300mm

Hi all.

Im looking at buying a telephoto lens and wondered what you would choose.

I need something that has an AF Motor for my D3100 and i was looking at the Nikon AF-S 55-200mm and the reviews look really good.

I had thought about getting a Tamron or Sigma 70-300mm but wondered if the slightly shorter zoom lens would be a better choice?

The Nikon AF-S is £135 at Amazon, so didn't know if that was any good?

You can't beat the 55-200 for value for money, I'm very pleased with mine.
I bought mine from Amazon as well.

I did have a quick look earlier on the Amazon website, at the picture which people have taken with the lens, looks awesome!
 
I can't speak for the other two but I have used a Tamron 70-300.

I've had some lovely sharp shots. However, the focus is woefully slow and, if, you're aiming to catch anything faster than a snail swimming in superglue, I'd stay clear.

Thanks Warren, the AF-S 70-300mm is a bit out of my price range at the moment!
 
Use my 55-200 a fair bit, was my first purchase after the d3000 a few years back. Don't do what I did and buy the non VR version for about the same price :)
Will produce good pics if used properly (don't they all), and ok light. Bit soft at 200, but you learn what's good etc depending on conditions....
For not much more than 100 quid I'd have another!
Use it on my d90 about 20 % time
