Yes
I've recently just bought the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm lens off these forums, however there is a switch that I have no idea what it does

I know what the top 2 switches do, but what does that bottom one do?

It's pretty much for Vibration Reduction outside of 'normal' hand-holding. I believe the manuals used to describe it as "shooting from a moving vehicle".

Think of Active as being the coarse setting and Normal as the fine setting.

Ah, that makes sense, thanks both :) I thought it would probably be something to do with the VR, but other than that, I had no idea

Active could be for horizontal panning ? on my Sigma there's a 1 (normal) & 2 (panning) modes where your switches are.
In Sigma's case 2 switches are better than 3.
