I've just got a new 85 1.4 and I have to say, I am disappointed to say the least - I had big hopes for this lens as the reviews are raving the usability from f/1.4. This lens is usable from 2.8 as at 1.4 it is very soft, also according to focal it's sweet spot is +17.

Needless to say I am returning it and sticking with the 85mm 1.8G, which from 1.8 is way better.

Like anything else you can get a bad one, sounds like you have just been unlucky it's a steller lens.

A few people have said that they moved from the 1.8 to the 1.4 and didn't see much benefit. The 1.8 is such a stellar lens that the extra size, weight and cost of the 1.4 kinda takes the edge off of it.

For me there is a huge benefit - the bokeh quality and the rendering but this is a p*** poor version of a very, very good lens - I think I didn't expect one of Nikon's premium lenses to suffer this badly - QC or maybe it's taken a knocking in the delivery.

I am shocked at the packaging for delivery - the Nikon box wrapped in bubble wrap in a bag! The box looks tatty on almost all corners like it's been chucked around!

That lens suppose to be slightly better then the AFD version. My 1.4 AFD version is sharp as chip on 1.4.

I haven't got any images at the moment.

I was hoping to do a comparison between the 1.4 and 1.8 full of samples taken with the same camera, same settings etc but the 1.4 is just too bad.

I think I'll have to take some of the condition of the box etc at least!
