Nikon AF-S 85mm macro lens

Hi all,

Was looking at the 105mm lens but have seen a very nice nikon 85mm VR macro lens. Was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this lens? Would it be sufficient for macro? I understand the working distance decreases, but any thoughts, advice ad direction would be great. Thanks so much

I haven't tried one but the 85 is only for DX bodies so it'll be no use if you ever switch to FX - plus the coating isn't as good as on the 105.
 
Hmmm... Which one were you looking at ?

85mm f1.8d af looks like its not 1:1 ratio on the macro (at least nothing in the specs)

85mm f1.4 g is bloody expensive :D and also doesn't mention close macro

85mm af-s f3.5 g dx ahhh this is the one you mean...?


Think your working distance might be a little closer than the 105mm.

You may want to consider an 150mm sigma (1:1 ratio too).

I was in Jessops today and they recommended a Tamron 90mm lens at half the Nikon 105mm price.
 
Ha ha ecnir :-) yes definately not the 1.4 85mm, if I had that sort of money, well I would buy you all a new lens.

Yes it was the 85mm f3.5 VR, which isn't a bad price. Buy your right te working distance is smaller than the 105mm. A friend suggested getting the 16-85mm Nikon, because I need to replace my kit lens anyway and use the extension tubes on thy for now. That gives me a working distance without tubes of 38cm, and closer with tubes.... I'll look at the sigma one me thinks as well.
