Hi all.

Yes, another lens thread!

I have had a look at this lens and it seems to get really good reviews and is capable the lengths i would quite like.

Is it good value for money?

I would like to order something fairly soon as my Mum is getting married next month and i would like to practice with 'the lens (whichever of the 1 out of 100 i have on my shortlist which i decide to buy ;) ) before her wedding.

I am also looking at this lens but would be interested to see what replies you have, how would this compare to the tamron, sigma lenses of similar focal length.
 
I have tried this lens. Its pretty good, the only thing that lets it down is that the AF speed can be pretty slow.

Given that a 300mm+ lens is usually used on faster subjects (or as it would seem due to the magnification), AF quickness is quite important.

Have you any recommendations in terms of AF speed for other 55-300mm or 70-300mm lenses? Thank you!
 
The 70-300 vr focuses very quickly and the quality is superb. They don't seem to sell for that much more if you're buying used.

I've heard all the 'slow focus' stuff but it's not something I've ever really noticed (I am reeeaaaaly amateur though, so it could just be me). I paid £229 new for it, and don't regret a penny of it. They say the 70-300 is better, but I'm happy enough to stick with this one.

NickD, thats a good price all the ones iv seen are around £280. When you say that 70-300 are better, in what way do you mean, better focal sharpness ?

That was from a well reputed ebay shop... There are a few on there for around that price at the moment, and from £240 on amazon. It's speed of focus that people always raise as an issue, but I've not found it to be a problem.

As im only just starting out, i would bet that i wouldn`t even notice the speed. as long as the pics come out sharp like your examples that would be great.
 
Wow Nick, they're great photos! You say you're an amateur, but i imagine youre a lot further on than i am and i class myself as a beginner, but your photos are great!
