Folks...

I'm after a x1.4 TC for use with my Nikkor lenses (especially the AF-S 70-300mm VR II), therefore what TCs are compatible for use with the Nikon? According to Ken Rockwell's site, the Nikon TC-14E is compatible with AF-S and AI-S glass... I'm not convinced of this following discussion with others and notwithstanding the 70-300VR's manual saying that no Nikon TCs are compatible with this lens.

I'm aware of the con's regarding TC usage, however the intended application is for tripod mounted photography with a MC-DC2 plugged in. So the loss of an f-stop or two is not hugely important. Albeit, I'm keen to understand what compatible OEM & non-OEM ones give good, bad, or mediocre performance/ results; e.g. the Kenko and Sigma variants?

The Kenko will work with the 70-300 VR, Nikons will not.

I have the kenko 1.4 and am looking to add the Nikon 1.7 or Soligor( Kenko) 1.7.
 
I've used a Kenko 1.5x telecon behind a 70-300 VR and can confirm that 1) it fits and works but 2) isn't really worthy doing - despite the loss of resolution, I get better results from cropping shots using just the lens than I do from using the full frame with the converter.

Cheers for that... Is there more than one compatible x1.4 Kenko TC model out there or are they all the same?

The thing is that by all accounts results from the lens start to get a wee bit soft as you approach the long end of the focal range. So my thinking (as-per my set-up in the OP) is to use the TC with the lens backed off to no more than about 200/230-ish mm.... ?
 
Wide open at 300mm, softness does start to drift in but stop it down a notch or 2 (about the same drop in lens speed as adding a 1.5x converter) and it's back to sharp and certainly significantly sharper than with the TC at 200mm.

Kenko PRO 300 AF 1.4x Teleconverter for Nikon AF-S

Hmmm, x1.7 now in the mix. What disadvantages (-ve points) would this have over the obvious x0.3 extra reach, when compared to the x1.4 Kenko :thinking:

Off course, there are ways around this ;)

The Nikon TC's are physically prevent from mounting - but you can get around it.

I don't recommend the combo really, purely for optical and AF reasons, the lens is f/8 at 420mm which is going to cause AF hunting / jitter.
 
If you have the 70-200 VR II then get the new TC20E III as they are a perfect match.

thats the one.

i did a lot of research before i bought it
it works on the 70-300 but you need a bright day

i tried it on my 85mm 1.4 where it worked well and on my 28-105

since then i have bought a nikon 1.4 and 2x convertor which only works with one of my lens the 70-200 2.8

There's a world of difference between the 1.5X kenko and the 1.4x kenko DG,

Sigma 1.4x TC, the EX DG variant... Is this compatible, and if so how does it compare to the Kenko PRO 300 AF 1.4x :thinking:

I was told the Sigma only worked with Sigmas. Kenko is very good and not expensive.
 
It's looking like the Kenko 1.4x is the one to get what with Nikon AF-S 70-300mm VR compatibility (as mentioned a few times^^^).

However, before commiting to seeking one of those out, is the Tamron SP AF 140F-FNS 1.4x TC compatible with this AFS VR lens too? If so, is it likely to yield as-good results?
