Has anyone had any experience with these two lenses, the Nikon I would use a 1.4 convertor. What would the difference in zoom be, and what about quality of pictures i could expect from these lenses.
 
Prime will have way better image quality. BUt then again the zooms more flexible with image stabilization. Hard call but id lean towards the 300 f4
 
You'd be better sticking with one thread rather than creating new ones all the time.
 
Go with the 300mm and converter martin. I said to you i had the 50-500 and IMO it was soft in the upper end, plus its a flaming beast to carry round. As regards IS did you miss it when you borrowed mine?.:)

Yes i liked your lens very much just remind me what it was again, is it a similar set up to the 300mm f4?

300mm F4 AFS and 1.4 converter was what you were using:)

Just got to justify the difference in price. I can get the nikon lens and convertor for around £1115 does that sound a reasonable price?.

Sounds about right, think i paid (SH), 900 the lens and 250 the converter
 
my 50-500mm os is awsome and sharp wide open at 500mm.
os is the best i have seen and its easy handholdable.

Had the 150-500 sold it and got the 300mm f4, it's the best move I made.
 
Yep 300mm and the 1.4x is my set up and I can see no noticable difference in quality when using the 1.4 tc.

facing the same dilema.
The lack of zoom on the 300 does put me off though.
For my wides I have a prime as I can move in / out but whenever I try using the 70-300 at JUST 300 I find am sometimes just to close!.
as you have had a go with a 300 + TC might be worth hiring a 50-500 to compare.
 
I have tried the 150 -500 and it is a nice lens but shooting Red Kites for 3hrs+ it would be too much of a lump.
