A 50mm f1.8 G - but I realised before it caused any damage ……. I was trying various combinations until I get a Micro lens

Yeah always check compatibility you aren't the first I've heard trying to do it and you won't be the last. Wouldn't you be better with extension tubes or a Raynox DCR-250 on a longer lens? You should look at the Nikon 60mm f/2.8D (or G) lens they are very sharp or even the older Nikon 105mm f/2.8D Micro which is the predecessor to the VR model.

In the end I used my 300mm f4 with a TC14Ell

I will get a Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR Micro in the next few weeks
(you can use the TC20Elll with that lens - although only MF)

I've always been keen on small bird shots but now I'm getting interested in Dragonflies
