Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED

Hiya,

For the money is a cracking lens.
I don't think I have any pictures to hand but I think you'll be ok outdoors with it.
It's sharp around F8 but the sharpness does soften above 230mm approx.

I have the lens, and it is fantastic for the price.Reasonably fast in low light.You cannot go wrong at this price point.
 
I use the 70-300 on a D90 and find it to be an excellent lens that produces great images. For an airshow, I'd say it borders on an acceptable focal length, especially with a crop body.

If you do a little bit of research you will find that the sharpness between 70-200mm is on par with the the bigger pro 70-200mm f2.8 VRII is good light.

I'm in half minds to keep the 70-300mm and bother with the new 70-200 f4 / f2.8

I think it's a great lens, but as has been said, towards 300mm it gets a bit soft, and also at the wider apertures. Most lenses don't work their best at the extremes of focal length and apertures. But in the middle of its range, it was a big improvement over a Sigma 70-300mm APO I had many years ago.

You pay a lot more for lenses to be better at wider apertures and very good performance throughout the zoom's range. The Nikon 70-300mm fits me for price, range, size and quality. I don't think there is a better choice for me. :)

Both of these were taken at 300mm and f8, and I think the f8 overcame the softness at 300mm quite well. If these were 300mm at f5.6 I know they wouldn't be as sharp.
