Yes
I am about to order a D700 and currently have an old 50mm f/1.8 AI-s on my D60.

It's manual focus, no light metering etc but its a great lens.

I've read in a couple of places that AI-s work fine on FF DLSRs, is this correct?

And if so, can anyone suggest any other top AI/AI-s lenses taht it might be worth keeping an eye out for on ebay etc? maybe a good macro lens?

Pre-AI's won't work, but AI converted lenses and upwards should all work fine:)

It's just know what was considered good back then? They are as old as me :D

aahh I read it wont mount on the D700....but would have on your D60 in M mode

mounted on my D5000 ok ....cracking.

I've used pre-AI lenses on my S5 and they worked fine. Of course the focal length or aperture wouldn't find its way into the exif data, but that didn't keep the camera from metering correctly. I don't think the D700 would have any problems.

Pre-Ai [or non-Ai] lenses wont mount on a D700
the collar that rotates the aperture mechanism - doesn't

Now I'm pretty confused. The lenses I used recently, were a Tokina 80-200 f/4 macro and 35-70 f2.8, which was previously with the original F2. Aperture had to be locked for mounting and the switched by hand. I can't remember if this affected the viewfinder image (i.e. whether the lens stopped down directly and not just before the exposure).

it is a ruddy minefield....:D

I have 2 pre-Ai lenses - 50mm, and 28mm as above post

both these mount on my D5000
as well as my Nikon F3 [providing the small aperture tab is raised out of the way].
AI or Ai-S use this tab to set the aperture mech i think

but only MF and step-down metering - which I hate - so use a Weston Master V exposure meter

bit off a faff-on though

Pre-ai lenses are fine on the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100 and D5000 AFAIK albeit with no metering. These should NOT be mounted to a D200, D300, D700 etc. as these cameras have the metering prong / lever which will be damaged by early lenses.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks guys.

I guess I was lucky (if they were pre-AI), because the tab-thingy is still fine. Or maybe the Tokina lenses are slightly different built than the Nikkors.
