After being out of the game for most of this year after selling up on Sony (A6000) I am contemplating going to Nikon.

Budget is a factor so deliberating over the following:

Nikon D610 + Nikon 24-70 f2.8
Nikon D750 + Nikon 24-120 f4 kit

So do I go for a better body or better lens!? The improved autofocus is something that would appeal to me but it would also like some decent glass.

In what way is the 24-120 inferrior? Is it much less sharp, do you need the F2.8? I am happy with my 24-70 but its hell of an expensive and quite heavy and if you shoot landscapes like me you really don't need the f2.8 end.

Personally I'd go for a used DX0 body and used glass to save funds and get better body and glass.
 
I would like the low light performance of the f2.8, however I have read great reviews on the f4. Really want to step up to FX now, I was contemplating a Sony A7 but after using a friends D800 i prefer the feel and viewfinder.
 
Take a look at the D750 owners thread - it'll keep you busy for a minute or two and may give you some help...!
My only experience with Nikon has been the D750 which I got with the 24-120 f4. While the 24-70 f2.8 gets amazing reviews the longer reach of the 24-120 is a big factor for many, and the low light capabilities of the D750 may compensate for the extra stop unless you really need the isolation factor. I don't know the price difference between the 2 lenses but the 85mm f1.8 is a wonderful lens, and may be within your reach if you go for the 24-120....
 
Good shout... I will look into this. I was also looking into the 70-200 2.8 as my second lens but the Sigma 2.8 and the Nikkor f4 has cropped up as some contenders...

I agree to a fairly large extent - it is heavy, but despite that I have one. I also have a Tamron 70-300 which is way smaller and lighter but not as fast and may well sell it soon as the 70-200 f2.8 is just so lovely.
I was very tempted by the Nikon 70-200 f4 and was only swayed by a bargain on here, but the f4 or the Tamron would be my suggestions unless you need the isolation - the D750 is just so good in low light that the extra stop of speed in hardly needed as you can just up the ISO.

I had the 24-70 too and at the same time as the 24-120 but I don't need f2.8 and even more so on the D750 with its low light capabilities. I also don't need the extra build quality (24-120 is built plenty sturdy enough for me). I could see very little, if any difference between the 2 at the same apertures. Add to that the extra reach of the 24-120 and the fact that it is more compact, I sold the 24-70 and I too never regretted it. A few more £££s in my pocket too for other goodies.

Tbh I shoot with the 70-200mm f2.8 on the D750 and don't find it that heavy, and even spent a few full days shooting with it hand held. It's a great lens and wouldn't be without it.

Obviously we're all different and we should try things out for ourselves (y)
 
I think that I am going to get the Nikkor 24-70 2.8. I think that I need to at least experience it and would welcome the separation. However i am leaning to to 70-200 f4 for the longer reach as my second lens.

Took 4 days for me. Their tracking is fantastic

Delivery for me was 4 days...

Edit - As Anibap says, their tracking is great.
