Yes
I have just bought a Nikon D200, which I am using as a back up to my D3. Having a play around I have found out that you can use the D200 as a commander unit within a CLS lighting system. Strange that this has not been incorporated into the D3 series. I'm sure there must be a way they could pull it off.

Just thinking out loud really.

You need an SU800 controller or master flash like the SB900 to trigger the CLS using the Nikon D3. That or RF Transmitter / Receivers. The trigger on the D200 is the pop up flash.

D700 has it too Darren (just to rub it in) ;)

I think it has something to do with the pentaprism though, the D3 has a 100% viewfinder which you don't get in the D700 or D200. I don't think the physical design allows for both features in the small space.

Practical difficulties aside, I think pop-up flash isn't compatible with a fully pro-spec philosophy.

Feeble power, fragile, slow recycling, high speed sync not possible, etc.

Same with Canon.

The D300 has near enough 100% viewfinder coverage and an onboard flash, so I don't think that's the reason. Richard's theory re their fragility is probably nearer, given the environments that many pro-spec Nikon and Canon cameras have to live in.

I always found it odd that Hasselblad chose to fit one to their cameras, it just looks "wrong"

I think I missed the boat in my initial reply.
