I note this bridge camera has an 83x optical zoom giving the equivalent of 24-2000 mm.

How do they do this? Is it because the sensor is so small that lens extension is much less than on a 35mm camera equivalent or a combination of this and using less of the sensor (like using an FX camera in DX mode)?
 
Never mind, I found the answer myself. The P900 has a 1/2.3 sensor which has a diameter of about 7mm hence the short length of the barrel at 2000mm (equivalent). It is a 16mp sensor so they are truly small pixels.
