Just got my D200 and need a bit of advice after spending quite a long time setting it up to suit my tastes (I think).

On half-press on the shutter button the 'Auto-ISO' text on the top LCD panel flashes constantly (ISO100 and max of ISO800 on auto) - is this normal or is it telling me something is wrong?

TIA

No..just tells you you are using auto iso. Quite normal.

Thanks, that puts my mind at rest - I thought I'd cocked up somewhere.

Although I'd turn it off myself ;)

How did I know someone would say that? :D

My theory is I'd rather have a sharp shot at 800ISO than a blurred one at 100ISO...

Nikons auto ISo is very good.I don`t use it all the time, but sometimes it is simply brilliant............

800iso on a d200 is not going to give you any good shots Dekhog its a good light camera and anything above 400 is rather .....to noisy

Noise is at least partially fixable, blur just isn't... I'll stick to my theory. It seems quite a sensible system to me having never used it before... perhaps time will see me change my mind though. :p

Dekhog, don't worry about noise. I use mine up to 100 for A3 DPSs in magazines. It's the shot that matters, not the amount of noise. Seems everyone is totally fixated on tech spec these days, which might account for the number of totally pants photos being taken....

;) 100 or 1000

To be honest it really depends on the shot to be taken... large areas of darker colours etc are not best for the D200 at higher ISO, but busy frames are much better (if that makes sense)

I really don't get this obsession with high ISO performance these days - people even choose their next camera based on it, which is fine and well if all you need to shoot are high ISO shots, but how many of us really need to do that?

High ISO is the new megapixel race perhaps? :D

I rarely take any shots above 200 ! So long as its ok upto maybe 400 it matters little. I don't take a lot of shots in caves without flash :)

Never been one to understand these types of comments on the D200.
I appreciate that it might not handle noise as well as the D300, D700 and D3 etc. but I've still got usable shots at ISO 1600 when photographing musicians in terrible lighting.

IMO it works a treat, for me when the auto iso kicks in, it's when I'm already at the limits I've set i.e. my minimum aperture and minimum shutter speed....when used with Manual mode its like a 'Aperture-Shutter priority' where it adjusts iso on the fly!

Now that's clever... I'm def sticking with it anyway, despite opinions being split here.
