right i been looking at these a while and seriosly tempted by one
are they old hat now?
anyone use one ?
i use a d7k at the moment but on af-s having a few focusing issues af-c seems to work better tho but it has a high shutter count now and guessing its time to change
or will i be better getting my d7k serviced and sticking with her?
would the d7k blow the d2x away ? they were obviasly the pro level dslr back in the day but dont know if up to scratch these days

I haven't used one in a long time but I would say the d7k will give better results. 800iso was about tops for the d2x.
 
D7k would be better! Depends what you're shooting
 
The D2Xs is a better option and still a great camera up to 800 ISO. Not designed for fast action but 12 MP still gives quality images.
 
I love the D2X and D2XS but, I'm sorry to say that they can feel a bit old hat in a few ways now. There are a few big selling points though, the build quality, the ergonomics of the gripped body, speed of operation and base ISO IQ. That last point is worth thinking about because it rarely gets mentioned but some of these older Nikon's really do produce great results at low iso, arguably more satisfying than anything currently on offer. I'd imagine that technically the images are inferior in every measurable way but they have a look about them that is very pleasing on the eye.

Where the D2's can feel a bit dated is the way the controls operate. I'm thinking mainly the zoom function on image review (though I'm sure I remember other quirks relating to the user menu). No live view of course. AF system is a little old hat. AF speed is fast enough but very few AF points.

I'd quite happily have another D2X as a second camera but I actually think they're a little overpriced right now. They seem to go for about £250-300 used which is more than a D300 and twice as much as D200. At around £150, I think I've have another in a heart beat as they're a lovely thing to use.
 
I still shoot with a D2Xs and I love it. I'd have to agree, iso 800 is probably the maximum, maybe a 1000 but 800 is more than usable for sure. Obviously there's better cameras out there but I still think the D2Xs has something to offer. The build quality is fantastic and at 12mp the quality is still very good. But having never used a D7k I am not sure if that's a better camera for you.

yea thanks for the comments i love the look/feel of the d3 but at the moment carnt afford one i used a d2x last year a friends and was a heavy lump but felt so solid and nice in the hand even the shutter sounds nice i understand these are old now but think for walking round with a 35 or 50 mm on will be just the ticket but have to agree the prices are creeping now was bidding on one that went to £305!!
wanting another body well constructed and reliable for around 250 quid mark obviasly a older classic body just in 2 minds what to get

Much as I love the d2x, for £250 I'd look no further than a d300. What you'll lose in pure heft you'll more than gain it back in relatively modern conveniences.
 
Results from the D2xs are excellent at low iso or with off camera flash with the SU800. I'll be keeping mine until it dies. I love the build quality.

Also, if you pair it with the 28-70 2.8 you can cancel your gym subscription :)
