Seeing as I can't afford a D3 or a D700 at any point this century, I'm thinking about adding another camera to my kit. I have a D200, which I love to bits so the obvious choice is a D300, probably used to cut costs a little. However, I do like the look of the D2x/xs and a few aqcuantances use/have used them and really rated their build and image quality, plus the intuitive handling.

Aside from the high-speed crop mode now blanking out a section of the frame, what are the major differences? Is the xs just a slight update on the D2x or are there things hidden deep inside that although not seen, will make it a better used buy?

i cant quite remember the differences, but i do remember having a firmware update when the xs came out on my d2x that gave it pretty much all of the same features that could be done via software. this was obviously free and iirc downloadable.

The only real differences left that i was bothered about where the masking of high speed crop and the different lcd screen, everything else relevent seemed to be picked up by the firmware update.

A D2x can be upgraded to most of the D2XS by some clever computer trickery....monochrome mode was one of the upgrades, but it is electronics difference and can be done if you know how to do it off the Nikon website, or like I did and take it in to Nikon and they did it there and then!
