Yes
Hi,

Do any D3/D3s owners use screen protectors? Coming from d300 and d700 I find it strange the bigger ones don't have them?

If you do use them, what ones are recommended, is there a genuine nikon one to fit?

NO - just not necessary. Nikon don't supply one because you don't need it - the D3 has toughened glass - it doesn't scratch.

I have just bought a D3s, and i stuck a Giottos cover over the main screen, just in case, then stuck protection film over the top plate lcd, and the smaller lcd screen on the back.

no. I've had a GGS one that a previous owner put on one of my cameras crack - now I've gotta fuss about trying to take it off. The screen itself certainly wouldn't have cracked under whatever caused it.

total waste of money.

BTW what are you thinking having original size images on your website without a watermark - they will be ripped off!

Need to clean your sensor too... That first sea scape pic is dust bunny central.

I figured with mouse right click protection activated, I wouldn't need to?!? Sorry. Never done anything like that before. Will have to look at putting a watermark on each image, I guess?

That pic was taken using my old camera before I had the sensor cleaned. Better do some work on it, me thinks?!?

Yes, fitted Hoodman unit - the D3 is a substantial purchase and I'm a belt and braces type of guy!

As the OP has been answered.

Wilko, right mouse click protection is ok for people who have just come to PC's, its simple enough to steal an image:

Nice shot btw. Incredible simple and it took me 30 seconds. I'll leave this up until you comment then remove it from the hosting. :)

When I had mine I fitted the Hoodman protector on the large back screen but didn't bother with anything on the smaller back screen or the top screen.

The screen is meant to be hard as nails but when you can get a very good very tough plastic protector that has a gap between it and the screen to allow it to absorb impacts without the screen even getting touched for £20 why take the risk?

Wouldn't bother with the plastic film ones as they do b****r all and wouldn't bother with glass ones because everyone I know that has one has chipped a corner leaving a nice sharp edge and they are awful to remove.

A GGS will come off if you heat the rim of it up with a hairdryer.

Lens off, body cap on, lay camera mount-down on a towel on a solid desk. Use a medium heat setting from two inches (ish) away for a minute or so. Keep heating and very gently lever one corner up with your fingernail. Keep going round the GGS corners and it should just lift off - take it slowly though. If it's cracked, treat it as two separate pieces.

PS. Don't roast it with a high heat!

Giottos used to do a 3-piece set for the D3 series, including one for the top control panel - see the SP8304 here http://www.giottos.com/SP.htm. It's impossible to get one now though.

Matin do a top LCD cover but it's cheapo.

Thanks for the link, wex do the sp8304l which seems to be the same part.

Will get one ordered at the weekend as I like the idea of an extra layer of protection.

Cheers

The SP8304L doesn't include the top control LCD cover - it's just for the main LCD.

If you want the complete 3-piece set, you need the SP8304 (no 'L') which is impossible to get now.

I have a Giottos protector on my D3. Yes they have resistant glass, but it still possible to scratch.

Exactly!

The D3 LCD might be 'toughened' but so is a car windscreen - and my car windscreen is scratched.

Misfuds sell it and the image they use is for a 3 piece set here

That's the SP8304L (it says so in the text) - it won't have three pieces. The picture is wrong.

I like the hard plastic ones that stick around the edges, but none in stock when I got my d3 so slapped on a think stick on one that the guy at my camera shop gave me. Works fine. I'm the type that chucks my gear down just about anywhere, a scratched up lcd would annoy me and its easy to avoid with a decent protector. It doesn't effect image quality so I don't mind having that extra bit of protection.

Now don't even get me started on uv filters for lens protection, I'm in the no filter camp.

What is a waste of time is giving good advice - they don't want to listen! I've had my two bodies for 30 months - they're out and about almost every day - and not a scratch on the screens.

Horses for courses, some people still don't wear seat belts, others dont lock their windows or set their burglar alarms. Using a screen protector is never going to be a waste of time, even if it just comes down to a selling feature.

No visible scratches on mine either. Mine are all 2nd hand and took a beating prior to my getting my hands on them.
Not noticed any on the guys' older D2x bodies either, although they did come with protectors issued.

I listened - I just decided I wanted to give a little added protection to my £3500 investment.

And very wise too, dont listen to those who say the screens dont scratch, its just that their screens havent got scratches on them, my old D3 had several on the rear screen and my current D3S has a minor scratch on it, its glass and glass scratches, bet you anything they wont let me loose on theirs with a rusty nail.

You really need to sit in a press room and take a look at the screens on the pros cameras.

Been there - done that - got the T shirt - still haven't seen a scratched screen.

I can't believe this has generated such a large response... The long and the short is if worried protect it, if not you probably won't scratch it, but you just might.

If having sex with the town bike, one condom will do, but best double bag to be sure!

In other words, better safe than sorry :D

apart from double bagging in that case would actually make it worse :shake:

a bit more on topic, i know its not quite a d3 but i have a screen protector for my d200 and i just find it annoying, cant see the LCD properly and it just gets annoying most of the time.

that said, i still use it because i worry too much bout breaking it - and considering the price of a d3... id probably use one on a d3 tbh.

You're probably right, I'm sure they can be scratched though, they are only glass which isn't even as hard as quartz, so it's not like it can't happen.

Like I said though, my camera guy gives them to me so I just slap them on. I probably wouldn't bother if I had to buy them. They don't effect image quality so no harm.

They're not glass...it's a high-impact polysilicon TFT LCD

Nope, thats the screen itself, the outer cover is high impact Glass.

Ive seen mine in the flesh so to speak when i had the glass replaced as it wasnt sealed correctly and condensation used to get in causing white smokey patches under the glass when direct sunlight shone on it, actually watched this been done as i waited at Lehmanns in Stoke.

I stand corrected. Still not convinced it's actually 'glass' - some form of polycarbonate resin maybe - like high-end watch 'chrystal' - which isn't chrystal or glass either...

I had a similar thing on a new D3x...first time out of the box it exhibited 'patches' of what I assumed were air bubbles. Only visible when no image was present and if you held the camera at an angle to the light.

After an hour or two after switching on they went away and never returned, so I never bothered getting it looked at.
