Nikon D3 memory card scare...

Hello,

I was at Kemble yesterday shooting the air show with a pair of 8G Sandisk memory cards in my D3.

Early on in the day I remember seeing ~150 shots taken on the display and was therefore a bit horrified to find that 15 minutes later the display said only 45 shots had been taken...

I put the card in a mates D300 which reported ~195 shots taken. So I pocketed the card and started on a fresh one fervently hoping that the images were all there...

When I got home I discovered the reason - the shot counter had reached 9999 and wrapped to 0000, and to prevent possible over-writing of images the camera had started a new folder. So all the images were intact. Phew!

It seems that the D3 would only report images in the currently active folder, but the D300 reported the images in the first folder... Very odd.

But something to bear in mind if the reported number of images taken suddenly drops - check the running image number - if it's very low, chances are that it's recently wrapped and your images are in fact still there...

noted for future reference :lol: i hate it when something like that happens and you break out in a cold sweat, the relief is always nice when it all works out though :)
 
You might have 'Playback Folder' set to 'Current' instead of 'All' (in the D3's playback menu).
 
PS. D3 manual page 281.

Post 3 should read - instead of ALL or NC_D3 folders.

First time it happened to me was at Wembley for the 2009 Challenge Cup final, i **** myself but as i was wiring from pitchside it wasnt long before the card was in the laptop and images being transferred and the "missing folder" appeared, phew.
