Hello all

As above, really, is the "s" that much better in terms of improvement vs value for money?

Would like to hear from you about this.

Cheers.

It's not a question of value - if you need it, you'll buy it.

My answer - yes, well worth it. Anytime I can get useable images and sufficient shutter speeds is worth it because it means that the images my customers get are improved.

With the D700 (same as D3) I would stick to 3200. With the D3s i'm happy at 6400 and am still undecided if I'm willing to go higher. I think ISOs around 8000/9000 are going to be useable. So that's potentially a stop and a half improvement

It's extra cost but for me it's worth it. So much so that I'm considering selling my D700 to get a second D3s :)

What!!! I thought you'd die with a Canon in your hands :D

nope, i admit i used to be a canon fanboy but the shocking customer service has ****ed me off. I may well be crossing to the dark side soon

I took a shot of Hares fighting recently in Holland, at ISO 5000 on my D3. Needed the high iso to get a fast shutter speed and big DOF. Because the exposure was good the image look fantastic, even without noise reduction.

That said, if I could upgrade to the 'S' for under £1k I would...

Would you mind posting it up?

Here you go. This is just a quick edit on the laptop, not processed it properly yet just cropped a little and resized for web - hence the need for a bit more contrast, saturation etc.

RP1_8158.jpg

D3 with 600mm + 1.4x TC, 1/1600, f8, ISO 5000

Web sized doesn't tell the whole story of course but gives you an idea. But even %100 it's quite impressive (and I can be fussy lol). Of course light wasn't tooooo bad although very dull as it was raining all day. In proper poor light the results wouldn't be 'as' good of course. But it's these situations where good high ISO is also needed, not just really bad light but also when you need fast shutter speeds or a larger DOF.

My view would be that for the price of a 2nd hand D3 I'd not want to be buying 2nd hand.

That would be my buying decision... the D3 would have to be a lot cheaper before I'd take that gamble...

But then again I want the camera for some pretty heavy use, not just a few hundred shots now and again.

So new D3S it would be, the extra ISO is a bonus (for me) but I don't think its much use in terms of the extra stop, but if it meant that something like ISO 2500 was less noisy (not that it is really on the D3/D700), that would be good - somewhere around 2500 is perfect for anything thats action thats lit for spectators. Thats still dark enough to cause something like my D300 issues, but perfectly doable with a D700, D3, D3S or even the MkIV.

Im amazed at the high ISO handling in those pics. Now it makes sense why these pro cameras cost big bucks.
