I have a D3000 and I'm looking to upgrade to either a D90 or D300.

I am an amateur who has no intention of going pro which would you recommend?

I don't have any specific genre.

Also, I'd ilke to keep my D3000 kit lens and my 55-200 which I assume will fit on either the D90 or D300, but how much should I expect to get for a 6 month old, mint condiiton D3000?

Thanks.

Andy, it all depends on what you can afford.

Both are great cameras but for me the the D300s would win every time. It offers so much more than the D90. I made the change earlier this year and wouldn't want to go back.

Sorry can't help with the price of the D3000 body. Have a look through the For Sale and archived threads on here, it could give you a general idea.

As someone who does paid work, D300 every time. I used to have a D90 and was very happy with it as a personal camera. If you like to shoot in manual, or fiddle with settings all the time, then D300. If you prefer to use Auto or say Aperture mode and not change things that often then D90.

I prefer the feel of the D300 as I like big heavy things, I also find having a lot of buttons/controls accessible a must too.

what do you like to photograph,
are you on about a d300 or a d300s,
as for the lens yes it will fit fine, and for the price of the d300 not really sure but probably body only £180 to £200 delivered tops. could be well of.

It'll be the D300, due to cost, I guess.

As for what I'll be shooting, it will be a mixed bag or landcapes, urban, few people (not portraits).

Thanks.

Hi Posiview,

I had a similar dilemma a few years ago - although I was currently using a Fuji S9000 at the time and was wanting to make the move into DSLR. I spent ages checking the web to read reviews of both the D90 and D300.

I was so close to purchasing the D90 due to the trickle-down technology that was occuring at the time, i.e., similar, if not the same, sensor as the D300 for a fraction of the cost.

In the end, as I was fortunate enough that funds allowed, I went for the D300.

Initially, my actual photographs were worse than when I used my fuji bridge camera camera but as I learnt more and practised more I am now very glad I went for the D300.

As Joe T has already mentioned - the D300 simply 'felt' better and I was also trying to future-proof myself (as much as anyone can!).

Have fun researching!! - it's half of the fun!! :)

Cheers
Osmo

PS Just to 'help' your decision - my Father-in-law has the D90 and absolutely loves it! (He moved up from the Panasonic FZ100)

PPS My much better half has the D5000 - and she continues to take much better shots than I do - simply down to the operator!! (Plus the fact that she has access to my expensive lens habit!!)

Hey Andy, Ive just upgraded from the d3000 too the d300s today, and all I can say is wow (if we could swear I would belive me) the step up in class and build quality is amazing mate, Im on nights at the moment so all I can do is sit here and stroke it (the camera that is!!) and read the David Busch's d300s book on it.

I got the d300s the MB-D10 battery holder/grip and spare Nikon own brand battery, and a new Nikkor 20mm 1:2.8 D wide angle lens for the £200 Nikon cash back deal.

Good luck with your decision

As has been mentioned, handling is key but that notwithstanding as a D300 owner I'd say get the D90 and spend the cash you save on better lenses. The D90 is more than enough camera for the vast majority of photographers.

In fact, I've been toying with the idea of 'down grading' from a D300 to a D90 for a number of reasons.
