Hi I have searched and cant find an answer so could one of you experts please help me.
I have a Nikon D300 and am using an 80-200D ED screw focus lens.
If I add an MBD10 will the extra power cause the lens to focus faster?
I know that the fps is improved because of the greater voltage but will this affect the lens also.
 
No the battery grip does not cause it to focus faster. Yes you get a faster FPS but only if you use the right battery. Normal EN-EL3 on the D300 will not get you the 8fps.

You need top use AA battery or EN-EL4 battery. Also you need a BL-3 part to use the EN-EL4 battery.
 
Thanks I knew someone would know. I do intend to use the eight AAs of course and just thought the extra voltage might give a bit more oomph to the focus drive.
Have you done tests on this or read it somewhere? Or just taking the common sense approach that as no-one has ever mentioned it in any of the many reviews that it is not so?
 
I haven't done a proper test for this but i don't see any faster in terms of focus when i use my d300 with grip.

This is from personal experience.

As a family we fly model airplanes, the control surfaces of which are driven by miniature servos which I would think use much the same motors as in a camera body. We do add an extra cell to the drive of these motors, which is quite acceptable practice, and they do pull more weight and operate considerably faster. I just hoped that this would be the same in my D300. Nikon could of course build the circuits to stop the extra voltage reaching the motor but not apply this to the shutter drive.
AAh well just a thought.
 
I had a grip on my 300 and still have one on my 700,both with the E4 batteries, they don`t speed up the AF as far as I can tell, they just get you up to 8FPS and last for weeks.
 
Hi, The MBD10 will not increase the focus speed on a D300, and will only increase the FPS if you change from the standard EN-EL3 batteries.
 
Hi I have at last found the answer. As you all say it will make no difference.

For the simple reason that regardless of the voltage of the battery in the grip the voltage fed to components remains the same.

The increase in fps is brought about by the availability of more current.
