Hi I'm having some problems with the Nikon D300,when I press the shutter, a Error message comes up and blinks in the viewfinder and on the control panel, also the shutter button makes a funny noise when I go to take a photo. When I did the first charge for the battery, I charged it for about 2 hours, should I re charge the battery and charge it for longer? Any advice, much appreciated, thanks :)

Natasha

Hi Martyn Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate it :), the message says 'Error' and it keeps flashing in the viewfinder and on the control panel, it's the Nikon VR 70-300mm zoom lens :)

Can I ask you to confirm it actually says - ERROR - and not -ERR- or -FEE-

Try releasing the lens and then remounting it to the camera.

I dont know that lens but have had that message with my old 300 fitted. With it all that was causing the error message was the aperture ring on the lens was not in the right place for the camera being on auto. Might be something like that with your lens/camera set up

If you take the lens off. Have a close look at the contacts on both lens and camera body. I had a similar thing with my 70-200. Couple of shots, dead battery and error. Had a read up, and got some Deoxit. Applied to both (followed instructions) and never had a problem since.

What ever it is, hope you get it sorted mate.

Silly question, but i assume you've tried another lens

Hi It says Error, tried remounting the lens but Error still comes up and the camera still makes a chattering noise

I can find no reference to that message sorry, use the Nikon website Q&A section, they are pretty quick to respond to queries.

Are you sure it's the camera making the noise? It could be a faulty lens with the VR system making the noise.

That is a good point, try with a different lens.

With the lens removed and looking inside the camera as you press the shutter - can you see anything moving (such as the mirror) to account for the noise?

Ahh
Try turning the VR off on the lens and see what happens.

That happend to me but it was the aperture ring on the lens was not in the right place like sawman said. Once I put it in place it was fine. If it's not that reset the factory default

Hi Thank you for the reply, going to check the aperture ring on the lens :)

If it is the 70-300 VR, that is a 'G' lens, no aperture ring on the lens.

Hi Yeah it is, got it in the post yesterday , emailed the shop, waiting for a reply. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it :)

No help really, it is one that I have not come across before, I just tried my D300 without a lens attached to see if I replicate what is happening with yours, but it does nothing, it remains silent.

Hope you get it sorted.

I wouldn't bother with emails, get on the phone, you have 7 days to return it under the distance selling regulations in any case, if it's faulty i'd be sending it back and asking for another or a refund.

Hi Martyn Thanks, I'll let you know how I get on, I ordered the camera from Amazon, so might return it to them and try to exchange it for another D300 :)

Hi guys Thank you for all your help last night, I really appreciate it :).I've made some progress, rang up Calumet Photographic (ordered the D300 from them through Amazon) and told them what the camera's doing, taking the camera to their shop in Milton Keynes this afternoon. If the camera's faulty, are we in our rights to exchange it for a new D300?

Without a doubt, though if they have none in stock maybe they'll just do a cash refund.
