Nikon D300 (made progress yipeee)

Hi guys Good news I went to Calumet Photographic in Milton Keynes earlier today and they swapped the D300 for a new one yipeee :). The camera was faulty, so they gave me a new Nikon D300. When they gave me the new one, my face lit up, I was so happy and was beaming with excitement :)!! I got my first photos with the D300 today which I'm over the moon about. Thanks to everyone who helped me last night (when I was having problems with the D300) and gave me advice, I really appreciate it :)!!

Hi Thank you for your messages, haven't uploaded photos to computer yet :), not sure if they're good enough to upload :lol:, I'm cheating at the moment (still learning how the camera works, that's my excuse lol), the camera's on P mode and Auto ISO :)

Auto ISO is not cheating, mine has been on that for 2 years :thumbs: it is a function of the tool you are using. I am in M mode 90% of the time, I set the optimum shutter speed and aperture I want, if I see the ISO creeping too high I can adjust either the shutter speed with the rear command dial, or the aperture with the front command dial to reign it back. All without taking my eye from the viewfinder.
 
Hi guys Thank you for your messages, I'm definitely enjoying the camera so far, even though I'm still learning and finding my way round the D300, I think it's a really cool camera :). When I was taking photos this afternoon, I was so happy to have a camera that works :lol:, that I enjoyed taking photos of Autumn trees (I love Autumn colours and I liked the shape of the tree).So far I'm very happy with the Nikon D300, just uploaded photos to the computer and I'm impressed with the D300 on high ISO performance and in low light conditions (to see what the camera's like on high ISO performance, I tried different ISO speeds and set the ISO to 800, 1600 and 3200) :)

Hi guys Here's some of my first photos from today, they're not very good or in focus lol because still learning where everything on the camera is and today was more about experimenting with the camera (high ISO performance in low light conditions) and having fun :lol:





For the photos,my settings were P mode, ISO 3200, Exposure mode: Programmed Auto, Metering Mode: Multi Pattern, Shutter Speed: 250, Aperture: F4.5, Focus Mode: Manual and Focus Area Mode: Single. What's the difference between Focus Mode Manual and Focus Area Mode? Sorry for asking a stupid question lol. Any advice on camera settings (still finding my way round the D300 but enjoying every minute of it), much appreciated, thanks :)

Here is a link to Ken Rockwells guide, take some of his comments with a pinch of salt, but this will help get the camera set up.

I like his guides as they explain what the various settings / controls do, you probably will not want to set the colours as loud as Ken, but you can adjust them to suit.

Picture Controls:-

Vivid is for holiday snaps

Standard for normal stuff

Neutral for people

I would tweak the saturation to +1 on these, and up the sharpening a touch, as a starting point.

Hi Martyn Thank you for the link, it's a good user guide and has helped me understand more about the D300 (there are more features and controls then the Canon 400D :lol:) yipeee :)
