how old the camera and what the shutter count also what lenses are you using, also can you explain abit more about what you mean by not hitting focus.

If the focus is constantly beyond the subject, it could be an equipment problem (backfocus.... or front focus if the focus is nearer), where the focus on the focusing screen is different than the focus on the sensor.
Does the problem always occur with the same lens on the body?
If it is just an occasional miss but random frontfocus OR back focus, it could be user error.
.........or maybe you are simply expecting too much of your kit. I have a D300s and it sometimes 'hunts focus' on moving subjects that my D3 would have locked onto.

Hi scott.
the camera is about 5yrs old, with a shutter count of just under 35000.
when it misses the focus, the picture looks just ever so slightly fuzzy, most people would not really see it. the lens I am using is the nikon 18-105mm which is only a few months old but is fine on my d5000.

I know I might be stating the obvious, but if the entire picture is 'ever so slightly fuzzy', could it be camera-shake? What shutter speeds are they shot at?
Hi chris. I am most certainly not ruling out user error!!! but it is only occasionaly. I tend to use only one focus point and out of say 100 pictures, 3 maybe like this, though the focus light in the viewfinder was locked on.
shutter speeds around 200 on the last ones. I would show one but tend to get bined to save space. plus VR was on, without tripod.

hi ben still a low shutter, what is it that your taking a pic of and it has not hit focus, as said 3 blurry out of 100 is awsome keeper rate.

Is your shutter button set to lock focus, and the object you are shooting has moved a tiny bit between half press and full press?

thanks for the help.
as the example, I was shooting a building with a tree slightly in front of it. focus was set on the building as main focal point, white balance for sun, iso 200, f16, 1/200 sun behind me.
I knew the tree might be a bit out of focus but thats ok, brings out the subject.
This was using the in camera meter for exposure. But the whole picture was just off enough that you had to look twice at the pic to see it was oof.
Jacob, the camera buttons are all set to default so I would think it is.
hope this sheds more light on it.

Is the camera set to FOCUS PRIORITY or RELEASE PRIORITY? Under focus priority the shutter CANNOT release until focus is achieved. With release priority the shutter will fire once it is pressed irrespective of whether or not focus has been achieved. I did not appreciate this and sent my D300 to Nikon for servicing at £90 and all along I dont think there was anything wrong with it although Nikon would not comment on whether or not they found any fault much to my disgust. merv:bang:
